Yeah... well, I'll be more active again once I'm back from vacation with unreliable online access.

Good morning
Hmmm - I didn't thought so. My guess is that it didn't went trhough. I had that a few times. Click on submit, but then it doesn't. Not catastrophical. I just have to remind myself to double-check when posting.

Yes, vacation was fine and I actually got some quiet time. Couldn't go as much outside as I had liked - too much wind coming in from the sea. I really like sand, but only at the beach and not straight blown into my face
Now, tomorrow it's back to work - can't wait

Evening
We had that Tuesday, I think.
Tomorrow's a kind of conference i will attend. To my luck it's here in town and dorrs will open at 8 in the morning, so I can sleep longer and even take the bycicle (the first time in nearly 3 years ; __ ; ) - and also there's no official time you have to be there 'til, so I can get out of there soon enough (on Friday it's even just until 12:30, so things might be a bit more relaxed than usual ... I hope).

Conference: Sounds good! Especially the longer sleeping times.
I'm lucky - when calculating my vacation days a while ago I realized that I had four left (our company policy is that you have to use up all of them until the end of the year), so I needed to place them somewhere. I have a four-day workweek till the end of the year - Fridays are off. Hope I won't get used too much to that.

Morning
Yeah - as much as our company leaves to be desired in a lot of things, they really are after it that people take their vacation days.
With your workplace I get the impression that you actually have to beg to get a few days off - that's not alright.

Re: The ground level - in and out
Good morning
Ah, well. As it's Öffentlciher Dienst the do have regulations on how much of your free days and overhours you can take into the new year with you.
Problem is: All of this is not as much true for the PhD students. As they are all officially 50/100 hours employees, but work full (or more) the over worked hours stack insanely fast (even those you work over the 8 hours). For the half-day-job folks the regulations are not as 'real' as for the full-time people, same gos withthe next step of the unlimited contracters and the limited contracters.
And then everything depends on the amount of work (you can't really leave stuff that isn't odne behind9 and the boss (if he says no, then it might come out hard to take time off).
So people like me are somewhat screwed.
But maybe I actually got out lucky - I am not expected to work like 10 hours day, because my boss doesn't really seem to observe that.
And if he's in a good mood I get off (but usually he says stuff liek "Well - you have to know if you can do that with your work." - wich is anooying like hell).
Oh - and when you address to anyone around that all of this might just not be really correct, you get an answer like "Well - you doctoral students WANT to achieve something after all!" - meaning "You brought this upon yourself by trying to get a doctoral degree, so you have to live with it!" .... say WHAT? Like oyu have any choices to something else. For natural scientists, especially for biologists, there are literally no jobs - except those where you rally for a doctoral degree ... are you kidding me?).
After all life is quite bad.

Morning
Okay, yes, I see... I've been at university long enough to know the situation for people working there, especially PhD-students. Being payed half a job, but expected to work double-shift.
And I definitely hear ya on the job-situation for biologists. There's a reason I don't work as one anymore.

Yeah - so much stupid rdidiculousness. And of course you#re always the one who has to act, to decide, to try and if things don't work out it's your fault alone as you apparently didn't try enough. This world is far beyond insanity.

Elyris, I just hope you will remember all this once you get into the position to decide what new PhD students under your command will or will not do

Re: The ground level - in and out
It's not much a single person can do, unfortunately. The whole system of university education here is sick. If suddenly PhDs or professors stopped taking advantage of master- or PhD-students probably everything would crash down.
There's a reason many young scientists just pack up their stuff and leave the country.
