Making of/Behind the scenes sneak peeks

Post by Atokirina »

Jon Landau occasionally teases us with a behind the scene pic featuring mostly green/blue screens and actors in mo-cap suits.
Let's see what we can really see on these pics...

Picture 1

Hmm... Interesting slopey surface in the background, with one actor wearing a loincloth and a shoulder pouch, and a second one (on the left) wearing a blue Na'vi suit with a tail (or is it a loop hanging from the crane?)

I think that's actually a loop from the crane.

Maybe it's not a Na'vi suit at all then, but a blue screen suit, and he's standing in for a critter of some sort!
I wonder what surface would have an arc like that.

Waves? Cliffs? It's a lot about the sea after all. maybe they're floating on a boat of something?

I wonder how challenging it is for the film crew to work while physically distancing. Usually everyone is crowded around the camera/monitors/sound recording equipment to make sure everything is exactly right. I guess now they have to take turns? That's gonna take a lot of extra time between takes.
We're going to be back on set for the first time post COVID next month. We'll let you know how different it is...

Yeah, that'd be interesting. I think there will be a lot of testing done.
And or course I wonder how they will do the scenes where physical contact between the actors is required.

Pics #2 & 3: The 'High Camp Bio Lab' set on stages in New Zealand with JC studying the set before filming.

Looks like a whole new Bio Lab set up. I wonder where this 'high camp' is... :idiotic:
Hmm, let's see. Probably 3 link units on the left, and one Avatar tank. And lots of techie and medical looking stuff that I don't know what it is.

Pics #4 & 5 - From Jon Landau:
Sigourney has never been one to shy away from an action scene. Here she is performing one for the Avatar sequels.
Sigourney in action 1.jpg
Sigourney in action 2.jpg
My thoughts:
1] Sigourney is still a bad ass at age 70!
2] Increased amount of motion tracking dots on the actor's faces
3] Braids on the helmet! Cute!
4] What are those hand brackets?

Your thoughts?

Pics #6 & 7 - by Jon Landau (Dec 15th, 2020)

The last set for 2020 filming - The Matador (a 50' forward command boat) on a 16-ton, 360 degree motion-control base. Three Technocranes and a Russion Arm mounted on top of a Mercedes-Benz. Just another day on the set of the Avatar sequels.
Matador Command boat.jpg
Looks bad ass! And very much in line with the style that we already know from the RDA.
Camera crane on car.jpg
On a car?! I had no idea this was a thing. Love it.

Oh yea, and on Dec 17th, Jon posted that they wrapped on live action photography on Dec 17th. Wooottt!!

Pics #8 & 9 - by Jon Landau (April 21st, 2021)
Preformance capture.jpg
Oh dear, pretty sure these are Avatar drivers on dire horses, carrying guns. Whatever this is, it's not going to be pretty! I was hoping Quaritch wasn't militarizing the Avatar program, but maybe that's what we're seeing here.

And on the second picture we're seeing a little cutie called Lo'ak, who will be Jake & Neytiri's youngest son if I'm not mistaken. Must be a flash back or something, as this is way younger than the kids are supposed to be in the movie.

Spider is sporting a kind of mini updo here and quite few hair embellishments - bot hnot seen before.

But more importantly - in the middle of his back, at the bottom of the picture, right next ot he blue hairpiece you can see what looks definitively liek a braid made from looser (not dradedI hair.

he also has a very metkayina lookign tattoo on his left upper arm right around the biceps.

Aaaahhhh - I want to see that so badly now

And more

Image

Official promo material for AV2

Hair embellishments, a new necklace and harness - both (especially the latter) very Metkayina style.
A different stripe pattern (that V-shape is new).
Also on the lower end of the picture you can spot the scar over his chest.

I am shooketh.

Interesting, Spider having a long braid? He's not in a mocap suit, otherwise it would've been likely that he gets an Avatar in the future. He's got his blue stripes painted on, so I can only guess that he's been growing out his hair to more resemble a Na'vi. Must be tough, poor guy.

What's that picture in your second post? It's not showing up.

I also just made a new thread for posting News/annoucements related to the sequels (before I saw that you posted the same video in here as well - oops)

It's a promo poster from the fan wiki. Unfortunately is seems it won't load not the picture url working as a link. I downloaded it but can't upload it.

I'll think of something.

Oooh I hadn't seen this one before. Very interesting. Makes me think they accidentally used an A3 photo. I hadn't expected the Meykayina to accept a human in their midst, let alone acknowledge him as a hunter/warrior and make him a (child size) harness.

By the way, whose Avatar do you think he's looking at here? He wouldn't be looking this intently at Grace's, right? So possibly.... his own? :geek:
Bc there's also this picture:

Yeah - probably someone effed this promo pic up - likely thanks to part 2 and 3 beign filmes back to back.

Another thing I noticed: his patterns seem to have changed a bit - the forehead stripes are obvious. but especially in the picture where he looks into the tank his patterns seem more Metkayina-y (not at 'stripe-y' and more like waves patterns). Interesting too.

In some way Spider is the best stand-in for the viewer so far - being a human ( with all the shortcomings that come with in in this environment) - in the middle of this.

Also something came to my mind: If you put Spider against someone like Wainfleet (that guy who likes to butcher wildlife and just shot a adolescent already runnign away from him through the back and feeling good about it ... and yes, there is some symbolism in this too) ... one may look liek a human but is Na'vi at heart and the other one is the exact way around looking Na'vi but being the wortst of human at heart.

Brok was right (yes- God of War Ragnarök is a fantastic story): It#s the nature of a thing, not it's form that counts.

Also: It makes me feel very uncomfortable thinking about how 'yeah git sum' guy instantly went into creep mode around Kiri.
